Creating a Happy Space at Home

Creating a Happy Space at Home

Your home is supposed to be your safe haven, a place where you can be who you want to be, without judgment. But if you’re living with your family, a friend or a cousin, some of that independence might be taken away from you. You’re not only responsible for your own self but another companion living with you. In a situation like this, creating a space that is purely yours and no one else’s is very important. This isn’t just crucial for your own mental health but also for maintaining good family relations. Whether it’s your bedroom, your study, the terrace or the backyard, you must always invest in a happy place for yourself. It’s the equivalent of a childhood blanket, one that protects you from all that is gloomy, keeps you happy and productive. Irrespective of the area you choose to make your happy space, there are a few things you can follow.

Use Calming Scents

Use Calming Scents

We also associate scents with memories, and more often than not, we remember scents that induce a sense of calm and comfort in us. So when you’re trying to create a happy place for yourself, investing in a scent you particularly like can be the place to start. With just a simple spray or the burning of an incense stick, you can have your room/house smelling exactly how you want. Scents like lavender, peppermint, rose or any other scent that you feel especially attracted to, can be a great addition to make your home feel more welcoming, comforting and relaxing.

Keep It Cozy

You can add accessories like comfy cushions and throws, farmhouse bedding with multiple warm layers of blankets, quilts and comforters, a chair or some plants for decoration. The goal is to make your house look cozy and comfortable, somewhere you’d want to spend your time. However, your happy place doesn’t need to have a bed. Honestly, it doesn’t even have to be a room. Your happy place could be the backyard, or the garden as well. In this case, you can add a small fireplace and set a few chairs amongst the plants to enjoy your day in the middle of nature

Surround Yourself With Plants

Surround Yourself With Plants

If you’re set in a garden, this one’s a given. However, if your comfy place is inside four walls that is open to no one else, maybe an indoor plant or two would be good for you. These will add color and life to your room while also cleaning the air that you breathe. Plants have been closely associated with improving mental health and creating a feeling of companionship, even when you live alone.

Make Use of the Right Colors

Different colors mean different things to us, each is capable of inducing a certain emotion. Yellow has always been associated with sunlight, something bright and shiny, lively and happy. While we don’t recommend painting all your walls yellow, adding the color in elements can give your room (happy place) happy vibes. This could mean a single wall painted in light shades of yellow, yellow wall hangings, yellow shelves and the like. (Any one of these will work, don’t opt for all of them altogether).

Prefer Natural Lighting

Prefer Natural Lighting

Letting the sun shine through your window can be a great way of getting rid of any fog you have inside your room and your mind. Your happy place cannot be void of this element. A dark room can only be a brooding place if you don’t let some natural light into your room. Also, vitamin D is good for you so let it in. If you have the funds for it, you can contact emergency plumber in Milton Keynes to have a skylight installed in your room.

Get Rid of Clutter

An easy way to feel better about a place is to tidy it up. When your shoes are placed in the rack and not somewhere on the floor, when your sheets are clean and folded, when your books are on the shelves and when all the things in your room are at their intended place; your house/room will automatically become your happy place. The idea is simple- your happy place must allow you to rest, to destress and unwind. But you cannot do that if the room is cluttered all over. A clean and tidy room can change that completely.
